Extraction and purification of waste water in the municipality of Kamnik

The purpose of the project is the construction of a sewerage system in the municipality of Kamnik and a comprehensive regulation of the extraction and purification of waste water. With this the international obligations, the implementation of the strategic orientations of the country in the field of communal infrastructure and the implementation of regulations in force in the field of environment will be fulfilled. The investment includes the construction of a sewerage system in the total length of 28 km.

Strategic and operational objectives of the project:

  • connection of new 3,077 inhabitants to the sewage system and the treatment plant,
  • safeguarding and protection of water resources,
  • reduction of emissions to water from municipal sources of pollution,
  • construction of adequate infrastructure for the extraction and purification of urban waste water,
  • remediation of pollution sources from settlements
  • improvement of conditions for conservation of biodiversity
  • improved security against pollution from sewage.

The project is divided into the following sections:

Part A - Tunjice (agglomeration ID 20002 Kamnik)

In the area Tunjice and Tunjiške Mlake a discharge of waste water has not been properly regulated, so we connected these villages to the existing sewerage system of Kamnik as a part of the context of cohesion projects. This system is implemented in a separate system or is used for the extraction of municipal waste water exclusively.

Most of the sewage system is designed in such a way that the waste water is discharged gravitationally in such places, where it is mainly not possible to install a sewage pumping station due to the terrain. There are 3 pumping stations in this area.

The detailed position of the channels and wells is shown in the schematic view of the course.

Part B - Stranje, Godič, Bistričica (agglomeration ID 4613 Zgornje Stranje)

That mentioned area includes an agglomeration, which is bigger than 2,000 population units. In the context of the cohesion projects the construction of a sewerage network was carried out, with a connection to an existing reservoir, which goes along the regional road Kamnik - Stahovica and is a part of the sewerage system of the town Kamnik.

Because of the environmental pollution with waste water it is necessary to discontinue the cesspit in this area and transfer the waste water as soon as possible to the central treatment plant Domžale - Kamnik.

Mainly, the network is based on the road, so that the sewage network is near the users. Where this was not possible the sewer runs close to the edge of the property, so it will be possible to access the land from public spaces or along field paths. The area is very diverse and is limited by rivers and that is why it was necessary to install five pumping stations into the system.

The detailed position of the channels and pumping stations is shown in the schematic view of the course.

Part C - Tuhinjska dolina

In Tuhinjska dolina the extraction and purification of waste water is only partially regulated. The existing sewer (collector S) runs from settlements Laze v Tuhinju and Zgornji Tuhinj towards a temporary treatment plant in Šmartno v Tuhinju, which is overloaded and worn. Elsewhere, the effluent is currently channeled into septic tanks from where it blends into the existing storm sewers, nearby streams, ditches, underground streams and farms, which greatly burdens the environment.

As a part of the sewage system construction in Tuhinjska dolina the temporary treatment plant will be shut down and the existing part of the manifold S will be connected on to the new design collector S. Together the collectors TD (channel length: 4,865 m) and S (channel length: 6,203 m) will transfer the sanitary waste water to the CTP Domžale - Kamnik.

In the first part of the construction of the connecting channels from Kamnik to Šmartno v Tuhinju a construction of both collectors and later a series of secondary channels is planned, which most of the settlements will join.

Most of the sewage system is designed in such a way that the waste water is discharged gravitationally in such places, where it is mainly not possible to install a sewage pumping station due to the terrain. There are 5 pumping stations in this area.

Detailed position of canals and pumping stations is shown in the schematic representation of the planned route.

Part C - Tuhinjska dolina - a secondary sewage

This part of the project includes the construction of a secondary sewerage in the I. and II. construction phase. The Phase I. includes a construction of 4,308.40 meters of sewerage, of which 2,304.60 meters are gravity canals of DN 200 and 2,003.80 meters of gravity canals with the DN 250,181 meters.

Phase II. of the construction includes the construction of 6,384.00 meters of sewage, of which 3,248 meters are gravity canals with DN 200, 2,955 meters of gravity canals with DN 250, 181 meters of pressure sewer and a construction of two pumping stations.

Upgrade of the Treatment Plant Domžale - Kamnik

The upgrade project of the CTP Domžale - Kamnik includes an upgrade of the CTP Domžale - Kamnik to the tertiary biological treatment with a sequential batch reactor technology - SBR and a construction of the input object with the adoption of the cesspool sludge.

In accordance with the Decree on the emission of substances in waste water discharges from municipal wastewater treatment plants (Official Gazette of RS, Nos. 45/2007, 63/2009, 105/2010), the area of settlement Domžale - Kamnik and the CTP Domžale - Kamnik must provide tertiary treatment until August 22, 2016, which means an additional removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The cleaning effect of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from waste water will be unsatisfactory under the new legislation and would - due to surplus of the concentrations - be an excessive burden to the environment.

By upgrading the biological levels of water lines the cleaning effect will be improved and, thus, the quality of the effluent, which will significantly contribute to the reduction of pollution of the river in Kamniška Bistrica will be improved, and be marked with a better ecological status. The CTP will also adopt and clean larger volumes of wastewater when rainfall from the mixed sewerage network. A safe operation within statutory limits and standards will be ensured and the excessive pollution of the environment reduced.

Subject of the project is also to build an entrance building and sludge reception. This will increase operational safety, allow a more efficient elimination of sand and larger particles, arrange adequate hydraulic flow to the CTP, increase the quantities of coarse purification of rainwater and reduce air emissions.
